Everything you do (instinctively) or are supposed to do (through societal pressure) is ultimately egotistical. It is only to maximize the chances of propagating your genetic material. You study hard to get a good job. You work hard to earn money. You create a family to have children and then try to educate them in hopes they too will get a good job and make money and be able to create a family and have children of their own to continue the cycle. Even seemingly altruistic actions like charity are geared towards improving society which in turn will pressure you or your children to maximize their efforts at every step. Survival is the only thing preoccupying humanity.
